When will we achieve nuclear fusion at an acceptable price point?

January 1

I’d like to start this year off with a TED video I just watched – hopefully you’ll find it interesting too. If achieved at a manageable price point, we will have solved a major problem with this World’s future – energy!

Physicist Steven Cowley is certain that nuclear fusion is the only truly sustainable solution to the fuel crisis. In ths video, he explains why fusion will work — and details the projects that he and many others have devoted their lives to, working against the clock to create a new source of energy.

btw: Happy New Year everybody!

The only man-cave I have is an office space!

October 13

I just got done looking at some “man-caves” online, so of course, I figured it’d be a good time to off-load all the photos I’ve been accumulating over the last several weeks and show off my own *sic* man-cave now:My man-space is really just an office space.

Oh well – it might not win any awards, but the “office space” works for us. We do need to get a lower chair now though because of the awesome new desk Alex over at Star Auto Care gave us. Thanks Alex!

For better examples of what man-caves should really look like, checkout Sam Martin’s “The quirky world of manspaces”; it has some pretty good ones in there.

When a Harvard Math degree barely cuts it

August 11

promo shot for Rodney Dangerfield's 'No Respect' tourJust noticed this smallest writeup on Cloudera’s About page:

“Philip Zeyliger comes to Cloudera from Google, where he worked on scalable storage for user-facing applications. Before that, he worked in finance, at D.E. Shaw. Philip holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Harvard University.”

Sounds pretty impressive, no? Checkout the space the other guys got. Oy vey!

Getting past first impressions

August 9

What impresses you the most about someone: what came out of their mouth, what they drove up in, or what they’re wearing on their back?

Case in point: I drive a Mercedes (previously a Porsche), and while they were both bought and paid for with cash, I’ve never used them to try to impress anybody. Truth is, they’re just awesome cars ’cause they’re both examples of great engineering, they’re fun, and they just work! cartoon of a PC on an islandAt the same time, I walk around in flip flops every chance I get, so you’d never know I owned them once I was 10 ft. away from the car!

When I have something to say, it’s usually on some IT-related topic; matter of fact, I can spend hours with anybody talking about computers, etc.

World Environment Day 2009

WED, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The Mission of the United Nations Environment Programme is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

Greenville Webmasters Meetup Group

May 20

Meetup's logoI’ve been reading blogs centered around news from the West Coast for far too long now – let’s see about putting the Upstate on the East Coast’s IT map along with RTP & Atlanta!

While I envision the group being mostly about web technologies, I look forward to whatever others want to bring to the table – as long as it is IT related.

Hopefully it won’t center around job searching like 1000 other groups out there do already – I’m thinking just plain ol’ IT talk, whether it be web design, web technologies, SEO/SEM, webmaster, standards, OSS, security, programming, etc.
