When a Harvard Math degree barely cuts it

Case in point: I drive a Mercedes (previously a Porsche), and while they were both bought and paid for with cash, I’ve never used them to try to impress anybody. Truth is, they’re just awesome cars ’cause they’re both examples of great engineering, they’re fun, and they just work! At the same time, I walk around in flip flops every chance I get, so you’d never know I owned them once I was 10 ft. away from the car!

When I have something to say, it’s usually on some IT-related topic; matter of fact, I can spend hours with anybody talking about computers, etc.

Point is: I learned a long time ago to not make assumptions based on first impressions. The best experiences I’ve had with others is when I’m pleasantly surprised with their background or depth of knowledge on a given topic – no matter what it is.

World Environment Day 2009

While I envision the group being mostly about web technologies, I look forward to whatever others want to bring to the table – as long as it is IT related.

Hopefully it won’t center around job searching like 1000 other groups out there do already – I’m thinking just plain ol’ IT talk, whether it be web design, web technologies, SEO/SEM, webmaster, standards, OSS, security, programming, etc.

A little background: I sat around 8 years in a little cubicle doing the corporate thing – coding COBOL for mainframes back during the Y2k fiasco. After a company buyout and my wife and I moving to Greenville for her new job at Michelin, I figured it was now or never, so I started a local company, “Websites Done Right’. I am very happy with it since it’s growing more and more for us everyday, and I think now’s a good time to give back by sharing some of what I’ve learned.

That certainly doesn’t mean I know everything, but I’m sure I can pass on a few things, and the goal is that hopefully you’ll have something to pass on to me too.

If that sounds good to you, join in and we’ll all work out the logistics later, ’cause I’m totally open to the meeting day and time – what’s your pick? Consensus wins!

The 2009 theme, “Trees are Terrific…in Cities and Towns!” was designed to increase student’s understanding of the importance of trees in a community. Here is the official Arbor Day poster for this year:

For every new player, a low-allergenic tree will be planted with American Forests, up to our goal of 20,000 trees. Why? Because studies suggest that higher levels of carbon dioxide and a warmer atmosphere may increase pollen production, which in turn triggers nasal allergy symptoms. And tree planting is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of CO2 in the air.

Arbor Day Poster for 2009

1. Use less water! Take showers instead of baths, fix leaks, and turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. And buy efficient fixtures by looking for the WaterSense label.
2. Save electricity! Do a home energy audit, get programmable thermostats, buy Energy Star products, turn stuff off when you’re done, and change your bulbs to compact fluorescents.
3. Reduce, reuse, recycle! Try to find products with less packaging, take reusable bags on shopping trips, creatively reuse other products, and recycle what’s left.
4. Test your home for radon! Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless gas that can seep into your home and cause lung cancer.
5. Use chemicals safely! Read pesticide labels carefully. Lock up pesticides, paints, and cleaners where kids can’t reach them.
6. eCycle! Take your old computer, DVD player, or other electronics to a recycling center. This helps keep hazardous substances out of the landfill.
7. Enjoy the outdoors safely! Find out the quality of beach water from your state office and get the UV Index to protect yourself from the sun.
8. Spread the word! Teach others where you work or go to school. Share online by commenting on our blog, or sharing your photos and videos. Encourage people to Pick 5 for the Environment!
