Research reveals new evidence of global environmental change

February 25

For all the nay-sayers in the house – yea, you know who you are – scientists have just published more information on global warming’s effects on the polar regions, confirming the sad state of our environment that will probably not heal itself for several millennium.

IPY has provided a critical boost to polar research during a time in which the global environment is changing faster than ever in human history. It now appears clear that the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass contributing to sea level rise. Warming in the Antarctic is much more widespread than it was thought prior to the IPY, and it now appears that the rate of ice loss from Greenland is increasing.

Global warming affects aren’t going anywhere soon

January 26

Tiananmen Square, May, 2008NOOA has determined that even if global carbon emissions were halted today, damage from the already rising thermostat would continue for 1,000 years. They say continuing business as usual will create permanent dust-bowl conditions in the U.S. Southwest and around the Mediterranean.

Pres. Obama said earlier today he is sending George Mitchell to the Middle East, maybe he can send somebody over to those global crooks, the Chinese, and talk some sense into their government too.

Tree deaths double across the western U.S. – regional warming’s fault?

January 22

dying pine treesIt’s been said before, and I read it again today: global warming is man’s fault! We can look right outside our window to see trees everywhere not filling out their crowns like they should.

It’s trees that produce oxygen and filter our air, and clean air ‘adds months to life’ according to a study just released yesterday from the New England Journal of Medicine.

So before we lose a national treasure like the 1,500+ year old SC Angel Oak Tree here on the east coast, or the even older trees in the northwest, we should all do as much as we can to help the environment!

CLEAN UP DIRTY COAL PLANTS NOW

November 20

Whether it’s dirty coal emissions in the air, or mercury in the water, South Carolina has plenty of environmental concerns to deal with.Coal? No! anti-coal activists

Some amazing, concerned citizens here in South Carolina have been going out of their way for us as stringent activists against the dirty coal industry – even taking off a year from college and one winding up incarcerated. Obviously we don’t want anybody winding up in jail, but sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures.

With help from informed individuals like them, and the fine people behind our South Carolina Sierra Club & other environmental groups, we will turn the table on these Earth-killing corporations.

One way you can help clean up dirty coal plants now is by signing the S.C. Sierra Club Petition today.

Will Burying CO2 On A Basin Scale Curb Global Warming?

November 17

A year after MIT’s 2007 study, “The Future of Coal“, Assistant Professor Ruben Juanes and graduate student Michael L. Szulczewski have progressed with the idea of sequestering CO2 from coal-burning power plants and other greenhouse gas contributors by looking at doing it in the real world – on a basin scale.

“Our model is a simple, effective way to calculate how much CO2 a basin can store safely. It is the first to look at large scales and take into account the effects of flow dynamics on the stored CO2,” he said.

By burying the CO2 in naturally deep basins, the idea is that a ‘capillary trapping’ effect will occur, where liquefied CO2 is trapped in underground water – think bubbles of water in oil. The CO2 would dissolve and react with the reservoir rocks to eventually come out as harmless carbonate minerals.
